For Immediate Release Nagaad Network Calls for Greater Inclusion of Women in Somaliland Government

Hargeisa, 19th January 2025– The NAGAAD Network congratulates President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Cirro on his recent appointments of women to ministerial positions, including Kaltun Sheikh Hassan as Minister of Planning, Ms. Milgo Maxamed Cilmi (Sambaloshe) as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, and Ms. Samsam Maxamed Salah Yacniile as Deputy Minister of Health. These appointments are a positive step towards recognizing the valuable contributions of women in government.

However, “IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT SOMALILAND WOMEN POSSESS THE POWER, ABILITY, AND KNOWLEDGE TO EXCEL IN ANY POSITION THEY ARE APPOINTED TO, INCLUDING MINISTER, DIRECTOR-GENERAL, MANAGER, AND REGIONAL GOVERNOR.”

While acknowledging the progress made with the ministerial appointments, NAGAAD Network believes that these omissions present a significant opportunity for further advancement of gender equality in Somaliland’s governance. We believe that a more balanced representation of women across all levels of government would enrich decision-making processes and better reflect the diversity of Somaliland’s population.

Therefore, NAGAAD Network respectfully encourages President Cirro to consider further opportunities for women’s inclusion in these and other key leadership roles.

We believe that a truly inclusive government, one that fully leverages the talents and expertise of all its citizens, is essential for the continued progress and prosperity of Somaliland. We advocate for a more comprehensive approach to gender equality, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to contribute at all levels of government.

We believe that increased participation of women in leadership positions will strengthen governance and contribute to a more equitable and prosperous future for Somaliland.
